Spring Pool Opening: A Step-by-Step Guide to a Crystal-Clear Start

Spring is here, and it’s time to bring your backyard pool back to life! Whether you're a seasoned pool owner or opening your in-ground or above-ground pool for the first time, following a proper process guarantees crystal-clear water and a trouble-free swimming season.

Step 1: Remove & Clean Your Pool Cover

  • Carefully remove debris and excess water from the cover before pulling it off to avoid contamination.

  • Clean and store it properly to prevent mold or mildew buildup.

Step 2: Inspect & Reconnect Equipment

  • Reconnect your pool pump, filter, heater, and any other equipment.

  • Check for visible damage, leaks, or cracks before starting anything up.

Step 3: Refill the Pool to the Proper Water Level

  • If the water level is low, use a garden hose to bring it back to the mid-skimmer level.

  • As the pool fills, take this time to skim out any large debris.

Step 4: Power Up & Circulate Water

  • Turn on the pump and filtration system and let it run for at least 24 hours to ensure proper circulation.

  • Listen for unusual noises that could indicate clogs or damage.

Step 5: Test & Balance Water Chemistry

  • Use a test kit to check pH, alkalinity, chlorine, and calcium hardness. Or, bring a sample of your water to us, and we will test it for FREE.

  • Ideal levels:

    • pH: 7.2 – 7.6

    • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm

    • Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm

    • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm

  • Adjust chemicals accordingly to balance water chemistry. Stop by Swimming Pools of Tupelo for help with finding the right chemicals if you’re uncertain what to use.

Step 6: Shock & Sanitize the Pool

  • Add pool shock to kill bacteria, algae, and contaminants that may have built up over the winter.

  • Follow package instructions and run the filter system for at least 24 hours.

Step 7: Brush, Vacuum, & Skim

  • Brush walls and steps to loosen dirt and algae.

  • Vacuum the pool thoroughly to remove debris from the bottom.

  • Use a skimmer net to catch floating debris.

Step 8: Monitor for 48 Hours

  • Keep an eye on water clarity and recheck chemical levels.

  • If the water remains cloudy or green, additional shocking or filtration may be needed.

If you find the process is too overwhelming, give Swimming Pools of Tupelo a call or message to schedule your pool opening or cleaning service. If your pool needs repairs, please call us immediately so we can get you in your pool ASAP!

We hope you enjoy your pool this summer!
